Ten common myths about accommodation
The way that LJMU provides accommodation to its new students is different from most universities. This section of the website lists 10 common myths or misconceptions that students and parents sometimes have about accommodation and also demonstrates the reality at LJMU in every case.
Myth 1. LJMU will allocate me a bedroom of their choice.
Reality: New students choose their own accommodation and every year over 90% will get their first choice location, but those who apply earlier getting the best choice.
Myth 2. I will live in an old-fashioned "Hall of Residence" and have to pay for meals that I don't want.
Reality: All accommodation at LJMU consists of single study bedrooms - and it is all self-catering.
Myth 3: I will have to share a bathroom with people I don't know.
Reality: Most bedrooms feature en-suite private bathrooms and the vast majority of students can have one if they want it.
Myth 4: I will share a flat with 2nd and 3rd year students or students from other universities.
Reality: New LJMU students only share their accommodation with other new LJMU students - but you can ask to live with a friend or friends if you wish.
Myth 5: I will have to move my belongings out of my bedroom at Christmas and at Easter.
Reality: At LJMU, your room is your room from the day that you move in until the end of the contract - so you don't have to remove anything until the last day if you wish.
Myth 6: I will have to catch a bus to my lectures every morning.
Reality: All our accommodation is situated within easy walking distance of the buildings of our two city-centre campus areas, where the vast majority of students are based. Students who are taught at the Liverpool Screen School site on Edge Lane or on the I M Marsh Campus also live in the city-centre but public transport to these sites is plentiful and inexpensive.
Myth 7: I have to wait until I get my exam results to apply for accommodation.
Reality: LJMU will allocate accommodation to all students who make us their first choice university, including all those who have been made a conditional offer. More information about requesting accommodation can be found on this page.
Myth 8: I will have to pay all my rent as soon as I arrive in Liverpool.
Reality: All UK students can opt to pay their rent in three equal instalments, and these coincide with the receipt of money from the Student Loan Company (which also comes in three instalments).
Myth 9: When I get to my accommodation, I will be left by myself to cope.
Reality: LJMU staff called Senior Students are located in all the accommodation we offer to give new students support and advice when they require it.
Myth 10: I will be kicked out of the accommodation after my first year and I will have to move into a shared house.
Reality: If you like where you live, you can stay on for later years in almost every case - the only exception at present is Apollo Court. However there are other types of accommodation available in Liverpool and if you want to try something different in later years, we offer you additional support via a dedicated department called Liverpool Student Homes.
