It's Good To Talk

Telephone Campaign Reconnects LJMU With Alumni

The Development and Alumni Relations office recently undertook a massive campaign to re-connect with alumni.

The campaign, which ran throughout April,  gave current LJMU students the opportunity to contact alumni all over the UK to hear about your experiences since leaving LJMU or one of its former incarnations - our student callers really enjoyed hearing about where your subject had taken you as well as sharing their experiences of university life today.

“The campaign was all about saying ‘hello’ to our alumni,” says Development Manager Delyth Roberts. “We reminded them that they are a lifetime member of our university community and we would like to stay in touch with them. Alumni were really keen to know how they could engage with LJMU. Many wanted to know how they could get involved with WoW, through their roles as professionals and suggested ideas for student projects, opportunities for student work experience and career advice.”

Alumni were also asked if they would consider supporting the LJMU Annual Fund, where even small individual gifts can, collectively, make a big difference through schemes such as the Hardship Fund, Sports Scholarships and Opportunity Fund. Delyth explains: “We had a fantastic response and so far have raised £24,000 from alumni who share our enthusiasm for improving the student experience here at the university as well as, quite literally, changing people’s lives. We really would like to thank alumni for being so generous in supporting the Annual Fund.”

An alumnus who talked to one of our students during the campaign said, “it was really good fun to speak to the student who called me. He was doing the same degree as I had done so we got to talk about which tutors and lecturers were still about, how the subject had changed, what was going on at the university today and of course whether students still went to the same old haunts we used to! It was a great experience.” An LJMU alumna explained that “when he told me how the Annual Fund makes a difference to students - actually the student was able to tell me about his own experience of being helped out by the Emergency Hardship Fund when things had got really tough for him – I decided it was time for me to do my bit and give something back so I am pleased I was in a position to help.”

For the Alumni we managed to speak to, we very much hope that you enjoyed this opportunity to re-establish contact and engage again with the University, and taking a few moments on the telephone to make a valuable and lasting contribution towards the LJMU Annual Fund, which really has made a big difference. For everyone we unfortunately didn’t manage to speak to, we hope we will do soon!
