Liverpool Centre for Environmental Technology
Water and wastewater treatment research is managed through LJMU’s Liverpool Centre for Environmental Technology (LCET) and is led by Professor Rafid Alkhaddar and Professor David Phipps (former director of the School of Biomolecular Sciences). LCET offers companies' bespoke research and consultancy services.
LJMU established the LCET to offer targeted research, technolgies and consultancy services. The centre focuses on research related to water and the environment. Current research focuses on the development of novel and efficient wastewater treatment systems and maximising the collection and recycling of water used during industrial processes.
Research on the development of bioreactors for the treatment of Metal Working Fluids and also for Residence Time Distribution in Hydrodynamic Separators (used for solid liquid separation) resulted in a number of PhDs and academic papers relating to nutrient removal and the understanding of the mixing and flow regimes in bioreactors.
As a result, LJMU’s BEST research institute, through the Liverpool Centre for Environmental Technology (LCET) is increasingly recognised as a leading centre of excellence within the water industry. Consequently BEST has been approached by a number of companies to apply this research in the development of new products and processes
Recently waste management and reduction was added to the list of activities and a number of projects have been conducted on the subject.Research income has been significant, with £500,000 awarded in the last three years.
