Developing 21st century teaching and learning spaces

The LJMU AV-IT group, chaired by Professor Sue Thompson, Director of Teaching and Learning Development, was established in September 2006 as a cross-campus partnership of teaching, learning and technical support staff and resource managers. Over a three year period the group has managed a £1.5m programme to enhance the learning environment for LJMU students and staff.

The remit of the AV-IT group has been wide ranging. Initially, work focussed on the identification of criteria for upgrading classroom teaching and learning resources across all of LJMU’s campus based timetabled classrooms. Following a university-wide audit, the group undertook a two year rolling programme to equip classrooms to a modern baseline standard of technological kit and associated fitments.

This has been followed by the development of an exemplar space programme to showcase the latest technologies and fixtures for 21st century learning. Staff and Students are reporting very positive benefits from this integrated approach that draws on wide ranging expertise and which is informed by many different perspectives.

Ongoing development work is now focusing on the continuous improvement and development of technology enriched learning and teaching environments.
