Magical Mystery Tour ...

Liverpool is the birthplace of the Beatles.  In fact, John Lennon and Stuart Sutcliffe both studied at Liverpool John Moores University’s Art School and it was here that they met.

Beatles associations abound in Liverpool and if you listen to the lyrics of their songs carefully, you will find that many of their influences came from the city.  In fact, many visitors will be introduced to John Lennon from the moment they set foot in Liverpool – our airport is officially titled ‘Liverpool John Lennon airport’ and has the appropriate motto ‘above us only sky’.

Beatle Week

During Beatle Week, the biggest Beatles festival on the planet, fans from all over the world flock into the city to celebrate the music of The Beatles.  There is live entertainment throughout the week, as well as art exhibitions, festivals, flea markets, guest appearances, interviews, autograph sessions, tours, gigs, an auction and more than a few Beatles tribute bands.

The Beatles Story

Established in 1990, The Beatles Story is committed to providing a world class visitor attraction, which lives up to the universal acclaim of the Beatles.  The experience charts the success of the group from their early days in Hamburg right through to the eventual break-up of the band and their subsequent solo careers.

Mendips and 20 Forthlin Road tour

The National Trust opened Mendips, John Lennon's childhood home on Menlove Avenue in Liverpool, to the public for the first time on Saturday 29th March 2003. The house was bought by Yoko Ono Lennon in 2002 and was immediately donated by her to the Trust.

20 Forthlin Road was the former home of the McCartney family and one of the most important houses in the history of popular music. This ordinary terraced house was the family home of Sir Paul McCartney right through the early Beatles years. This was where The Beatles composed and rehearsed their earliest songs.

The Cavern Club

In the early days of the group, the Beatles played nearly 300 times in the Cavern Club which was located in the basement of a Victorian warehouse.

Monuments and statues

There are several monuments to the Beatles in Liverpool, including a statue of John Lennon at the Cavern Pub, a bronze statue with the title "Four lads who shook the world" in Mathew Street and the famous Eleanor Rigby sculpture in Stanley Street which is dedicated to ‘all the lonely people’.  In Chavasse Park, opposite the Albert Dock there is a 20 ton, 51 foot long, plate metal, yellow submarine.  It was built by the famous Cammell Laird Shipbuilders for the Liverpool International Garden Festival in 1984.  In 1997 the festival closed and the Yellow Submarine was eventually rescued by the Council, renovated and moved to the city centre where it has become one of the most recognisable landmarks in the city.
