Work Related Learning Unit

Work related learning or work placements are an integral part of all our programmes.

The WRL unit is based in the Attic suite in the Barkhill Building. Access is via the stairs or lift next to the student centre. Our office manager and the Work Related Learning Team of administrators work with the primary and secondary partnership managers and other academic staff to ensure the smooth running of the work-related experiences which are an integral part or all of our programmes. As well as offices the unit contains a meeting room for student interviews and the Student Associate base.

Work related learning will not only give you great contacts out in the workplace, it will give you an opportunity to experience first-hand possible careers before you graduate.

Partnerships with schools ensure that all our teacher training students receive appropriate and varied professional training, enabling them to graduate as confident and competent teachers. Undergraduate students can expect to complete up to five extended placements, in a variety of schools; our Work Related Learning (WRL) Team works with Centre teams to secure these for students.

In addition to our teacher training Programmes, our vocational undergraduate Programmes (including Tourism, Consumer and Food related degree programmes, Sports Development and PE, Dance and Outdoor and Environmental Education programmes and Education Studies programmes) incorporate work related learning which provides valuable experience and the opportunity to place academic theory into practice within the workplace. The WRL Team works with many local businesses, schools and organisations, academic colleagues across the Faculty and students to identify and secure placements which are appropriate to Programme requirements and future career aspirations. The team has a large number of contacts throughout the area and feedback shows that work placements provide mutual benefits for our students and the organisations who support them.
