Allan Hackett
Biography
After graduating in Agricultural Science (Animal Physiology & Nutrition) in 1976 I trained and worked as a clinical dietitian in the NHS. I then became involved in research and worked as a Research Assistant until 1989 on varied projects including: the role of food intake in post-surgical malnutrition, the first longitudinal study of diet and dental caries, the role of diet in the management of children with diabetes mellitus and developing information systems in paediatric epidemiology. In 1989 I began work as senior lecturer in nutrition but have continued research in diverse projects including: the impact of coeliac disease, the effect of excluding meat from the diet (children, adolescents and adults), diet and homelessness, the cost of breast feeding and diets in transition (the effect of leaving home and changes over time in the eating habits of Liverpool children).
Research Interests
My research interests concern the measurement of food intake and the promotion of healthier eating habits – especially in children. Most of this work now focuses on the SportsLinx project organised by Liverpool City Council in partnership with Liverpool PCT and Liverpool schools.
Other activities
I teach nutrition and related subjects for the Nutrition, Food & Nutrition, Community Nutrition and Food Design and Technology degree programmes. I am a member of Liverpool’s Obesity Task Force, the Transforming School Food Group and the Nursery Nutrition group. I am collaborating in research with a number of groups in this country and abroad including:
- CHANCE: Community Health Management to Enhance Behaviour – EU GRUNDTVIG project. 10 EU partners: Germany (4), Austria (2), Romania, Latvia, Sweden & England (JMU).
