British Canoe Union (BCU) Star Tests, FSRT and Coaching Awards
Basic kayaking skills up to BCU 2/3* standard are taught as part of Outdoor Pursuits 1 (Semester 1) and further developed in terms of the BCU Coaching Scheme at Level 1 (Semester 2) in Outdoor Leadership 1: Mountain & River Environments. Students who already hold 2* test are eligible to take the Foundation Safety & Rescue test (FSRT) to prepare for the Coach Level 1 Award, or some take 3* (moving water) test to improve their skills. Opportunities for Assessment for Star tests and Coaching Awards (by outside assessors) can be arranged both inside and outside the course, depending on individual requirements. An additional fee is payable for Governing Body Award Coach training and assessments.

The basic syllabus for this award is covered in the two modules at Level 1: Outdoor Pursuits 1 (Semester 1) and Outdoor Leadership 1: Mountain & River Environments (Semester 2). Skills are further developed in Outdoor Pursuits 2 and opportunities for formal training and assessment courses by staff using external assessors can be arranged later in the course according to individual needs (eg. at Level 3, Semester 2, as part of Outdoor Leadership 3: Career Development ). An addional fee is charged for these courses.
Local Cave Leader's (LCL) AwardFor those with sufficient experience who have already registered with the scheme, the training for Level 1 of this award can be arranged as part of the course at Level 2 (Semester 2) in Evolution of Glacial, Fluvial and Karst Landscapes which takes place in the Yorkshire Dales. British Orienteering Federation (BOF) Awards
Though Orienteering is taught as part of Outdoor Pursuits 1 (Level 1, Semester 1) the training and assessment for this award is not part of that course. However, from time to time University staff arrange for outside assessors to visit the campus to assess groups of students for BOF Awards. This may be offered as an option in Outdoor Pursuits 2.
