Professor Tim Stott
Professor of Physical Geography and Outdoor Education
Tim joined Liverpool JMU in 1994 having previously been a further education tutor in environmental science, a tutor for the Field Studies Council in geography/ecology and a secondary school teacher in geography and outdoor activities. In 1997 Tim became programme leader for the outdoor education programmes at LJMU, which he continues until 2011. In 2002 he was appointed Reader and in 2008 Professor at LJMU. In 2007 he was made Visiting Professor in Outdoor Education and Environmental Management at University of Derby.
Research
Tim's research interests are mainly in fluvial geomorphology, where his recent work is concerned with proglacial suspended sediment dynamics in arctic and alpine environments (he has carried out fieldwork in Iceland, Svalbard, Greenland, French and Swiss Alps; British Columbia). His PhD and earlier work focused on the effects of forestry in the UK uplands on bank erosion and stream sediment dynamics (bedload and suspended sediment) at Balquhidder in Scotland and Plynlimon in Wales. Latterly his research has encompassed e-learning in higher education with a particular interest in on-line learning and assessment. He has also published on the benefits of fieldwork and expeditions, as well as student employability in outdoor education. He has been a research fellow in Australia (at Charles Sturt University in 2001 and The University of Queensland in 2005). He collaborates in research with University of Northern British Columbia and University of Edinburgh. Tim has directed several successful LJMU PhD students in fluvial geomorphology, outdoor and environmental education and has been external examiner for numerous PhD students at a range of UK institutions. He is a member of the Editorial Advisory Board for the Journal of Adventure Education & Outdoor Leadership (since 2005), reviews editor for fluvial geomorphology for the journal Progress in Physical Geography (2009-12) and is a reviewer for several top academic journals.Teaching
Earth science, geomorphology, weather and atmospheric processes, mountains and upland landscapes, natural hazards and applied geomorphology, fluvial processes, outdoor pursuits (canoe/kayaking, mountain leadership, orienteering, skiing, winter mountaineering).
Qualifications
BSc (Hons) Environmental Science (University of Wales, Aberystwyth); PhD in Fluvial Geomorphology (University of Stirling); PGCE (University of Wales, Bangor); Fellow of the Higher Education Academy; Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society (RGS); RGS Chartered Geographer (Geomorph). He has been an external examiner, chief examiner and subject reviewer at a range of UK HE Institutions: University of Worcester (2000-05); Edinburgh University (2000-2004); University of Derby (2004-07); Manchester Metropolitan University (2005-10); University of Cumbria (Ambleside) 2007-11; UHI (2009-11); University of Leeds (2010-13).Professional Qualifications: Summer ML; Winter ML trg; SPA; Alpine Ski Leader; REC Level 2 First Aid (2009); BCU L3 Coach (Inland Kayak); UKCC Level 2 Paddlesports Coach; RYA Level 2; Sea Kayak 4* and 5* trg; Open Canoe 4*.
