Barry Forrester

Senior Lecturer in Outdoor Education

Playing and working in the outdoors for over 30 years; including Borneo, Fiji, Far East, Europe and Canada, has developed a deep appreciation for the wonders of our environment. Teaching outdoor education and sport for over 17 years across a widely diverse group of young people and adults develops an open mind to what people are capable of achieving and Barry believes the outdoors can provide a great arena for this development. Previous work experience; Special Educational Needs, Youth at Risk groups, Alternative Curriculum  Projects, Local Education Authority contracts; management of activity camps and work based learning projects, freelance Outdoor Worker, First Aid Trainer / Assessor and former Curriculum Leader of Outdoor Education and Sport at Wirral Metropolitan College.

Teaching

Earth Science and Geography, Natural Hazards; Recreational Ecology; Kayaking; Mountain Leadership; Skiing; Dissertation supervision; Work Based Learning.

Research

My interests focus on recreation and travel in the wilderness (impacts and interactions between people and our wild environments).  Also recent collaboration with University of Northern British Columbia (2008, 2010) into pro-glacial suspended sediment dynamics in arctic and alpine environments (British Columbia) has stimulated another avenue of research interest.
