Auditions
The purpose of the audition day
Your time with us today enables us to ensure that we do not accept you onto the course without a reasonable chance that you will be a successful graduate in three years time. It also helps you to decide whether this is the right course for you.
The practical audition will involve:
- A contemporary technique class
- A creative workshop leading to an informal performance of work created
- A short discussion (verbal interview) in smaller groups
What are we looking for?
In the contemporary technique class we look for the potential to develop the level of quality and skills required by the profession. We do not necessarily expect you to have years of formal dance training prior to audition. However, you must demonstrate the necessary potential to benefit from the contemporary-based course, given that the technical, physical and artistic demands are considerable.
In the creative workshop we look for your ability to:
- co-operate with others in the production of a small piece of work
- be sensitive to others both during the process and in performance
- propose ideas and listen to the ideas of others
- be an active and imaginative member of the group
PLUS
- perform with confidence and with an awareness of the others in your group
Please Note: We no longer ask auditionees to prepare a solo for audition at LJMU. We prefer to see the creative process evolve in the creative workshop.
In the group discussion we look for your ability to:
- Evaluate and reflect on your practical work in the audition
- Share your experiences of dance and explain why these have led you to want to study dance in HE
- Justify why you want to study for a Contemporary dance degree
- Identify your future career goal aspirations and how you believe a degree in Contemporary dance may facilitate these.
- Explain why you want to come to LJMU to study dance.
What do you need to prepare or bring with you?
- Close fitting dance apparel (e.g. Leotard/tights, unitard, leggings) so that your body alignment can be seen. We ask that you do not wear clothing, which is not specialist for dance activity or displays “large logos or slogans”.
- For the class we expect all dancers to be in bare feet (no shoes, socks or tights covering feet) – Please ensure that hair in tied back and fringes are gripped back from face.
- A small bottle of water with a screw top lid for practical class (in between sessions)
- Practical layers (tight fitting) for you to warm-up in which can be removed once class begins.
- Change of clothing for travelling/ in case of a formal interview
- Money for your lunch - There is an onsite student refectory that you are welcome to use or alternatively you are welcome to bring your own lunch with you.
What happens after the audition process? Will I get offered a place?
If you have been successful in the audition process we will make you an offer of a place on our degree. An offer is usually conditional upon your achievement of the minimum entry requirements.
If you have been unsuccessful on the day of your audition you will also be notified of this decision on UCAS.
