SDO Research and Scholarly Activity

Research and scholarly activity is an important element within the Centre with a clear focus on learning, teaching and assessment related research which helps inform teaching at all levels. Members of the Centre are actively engaged in developments within the Centre for Excellence in Teaching and Learning (CETL) with a specific theme of leadership and professional learning.

A growing number of research-orientated staff contributes to the Centre’s National and International profile. Cutting edge research focuses on aspects of inclusion, coaching, health related physical activity, Skinner Releasing Technique, choreography, dance technique, community dance, and dance and technology, Furthermore, research with specialist sports and arts colleges, clubs, dance organisations and governing bodies of sport is being undertaken. This work has been disseminated amongst a wide audience through peer-reviewed publications, workshops, and choreographic commissions nationally and internationally. Structures are in place to provide all staff with the opportunity to undertake research in a supportive and collaborative manner.

The outdoor education team recently completed an evaluation of the role of outdoor education programmes in modifying anti-social and drug taking behaviour. Other areas of staff interest include earth sciences/environmental education, fieldwork, adventure therapy, inclusive physical education and research into teaching and learning, including mobile and e-Learning. Additionally, research and scholarly activity play a central role in the Centre’s school and community partnerships.

The Centre for Sport, Dance and Outdoor Education established in 2006 has adopted the University’s mission to Dream, Plan and Achieve by seeking to build the profile of its staff, courses, external partners and its students’. Through the theme of maintaining ‘currency, innovation, and collaboration’ the Centre seeks to build upon its existing portfolio, whilst exploring new areas of activity over the coming years.
