Black Minority Ethnic (BME): Diversity in Teaching

At the Faculty of Education, Community and Leisure we promote Teacher Training courses to individuals from the Black and Minority Ethnic community. We support potential applicants from a BME background with course selection, guidance and application. LJMU offers a number of routes into teaching at both undergraduate and postgraduate level. We hold teaching advice events in the Black and Minority Ethnic community in order to raise the profile of opportunities within teacher training and promote the support that is available for potential students.

Liverpool John Moores University understands the importance of a diverse teaching force that reflects the diversity within Liverpool. As a university we recognise the importance of education and the contribution role models make to our diverse communities which is why we support the Black History Month Education Award. We work with schools to encourage more pupils to embark on a career in teaching especially through programmes like our summer university for students in Year 12.

GCSE Equivalence Tests

We understand that not everyone who wants to become a teacher has the qualifications required. This is particularly true when it comes to your GCSEs. For Primary Education, you require English Language, Mathematics and a Science at grade C or above. For Secondary Education, you require English Language and Mathematics only.

Every academic year, we offer GCSE Equivalence Tests which the University will accept on its ITT courses in place of the relevant GCSEs. These run at various times each year. You are welcome to sit as many times (subject to sufficient numbers) as it takes to pass. These tests are available in English Language (AEFIT), Mathematics (AMFIT) and Science (ASFIT) at £60 per test. Further information on the tests can be found at http://www.ljmu.ac.uk/teaching/gcse/.
