Biomechanics of Gait and Posture

This new Masters programme is designed for students wishing to specialise in the biomechanics of gait, posture and balance either for a professional career in health related movement analysis and/or for academic and professional development. The programme is particularly well suited to physiotherapists who wish to deepen their biomechanical expertise. Extensive training is provided in laboratory-based skills and in the interpretation of biomechanical findings, as well as comprehensive coverage of contemporary issues in biomechanics. The programme is offered within a full-time (1 year) or part-time (2 year) study framework and aggregates core and option modules on a semester basis.

Biomedical Science

This programme offers students a postgraduate education in Biomedical Science. Through choices of tutorial attendance and coursework topics students are able to concentrate on one of the specialist pathology disciplines: cellular pathology, cytopathology, clinical biochemistry, haematology & transfusion science and medical microbiology.  Throughout the programme, students are provided with up-to-date information on disease processes and their laboratory diagnosis.  In addition there are discussions and workshops on current issues in biomedical science.  Many modules are supported by seminars by practising biomedical scientists, clinical scientists and scientists from the commercial sector.

Clinical Pharmacy

The Clinical Pharmacy programme has evolved from the amalgamation of the enthusiasm and expertise which has been generated over the years in the University and in local hospital pharmacy departments. The course is offered as a linked Postgraduate Certificate, Postgraduate Diploma and MSc.

The overall aim of the course is education and training for successful and responsible careers in clinical pharmacy. These clinical pharmacists will be equipped to promote, develop and assess clinical pharmacy services within their profession, which will be of direct benefit to the health services and to the patients they serve.

Health Psychology

Health Psychology is a relatively young, but rapidly growing discipline that is attracting a great deal of interest from undergraduate students as a potential postgraduate career path.

In order to become a Chartered Health Psychologist, students must fulfil a number of requirements determined by the British Psychological Society. These include Stage 1 training, which involves the satisfactory completion of an accredited MSc course followed by Stage 2 training, of two or more years spent acquiring a range of supervised skills connected with consultancy, research, teaching and training. This course provides all these criteria for career progression.

Industrial Biotechnology

This course aims to provide experience in a wide range of theoretical and practical aspects of biotechnology suitable for employment in the biotechnology industry. Biotechnology is a multi-disciplinary science and this is reflected in the Industrial Biotechnology programme, which offers a wide range of training with particular emphasis on Fermentation Technology and Molecular Biology.

Occupational Psychology

The course is accredited by the British Psychological Society (BPS), and will provide eligibility for membership of the Division of Occupational Psychology and therefore qualification as a Chartered Occupational Psychologist following relevant professional experience. The course also offers students the opportunity to obtain the BPS Level A Certificate of Competence in Occupational Testing.

Psychology of Sport

The MSc Psychology of Sport programme is designed for students who do not possess Graduate Basis for Registration (GBR) on entry but wish to specialise within the discipline of sports psychology, train for sports psychology support work with athletes, acquire vocationally related psychological skills, develop academic understanding in the subject area, and gain intellectual and research skills within a specialist field. Opportunities are available for applied placement under the supervision of accredited practitioners.
