ADVANCED MANUFACTURING TECHNOLOGY RESEARCH LABORATORY (AMTReL)

Overview

The Advanced Manufacturing Technology Research Laboratory (AMTReL) was founded over 30 years ago and has established an international reputation in fundamental and applied contract research on precision manufacturing and grinding process technologies. It was awarded a Grade 5 quality rating in the two most recent Research Assessment Exercises by the Higher Education Funding Councils for the UK.

The aim of AMTReL is to assist industry achieve improved quality, accuracy and productivity in manufacturing processes and operations using materials, process control and systems technologies.  Research activity is supported with a wide experience in physical and empirical process modelling, data acquisition and analysis, and in sensors and instrumentation for process monitoring.

Research work has and continues to secure the financial support of the UK Government (for example EPSRC and Teaching Company Directorate), the European Commission Research (BRITE-EURAM) and leading industrial companies including Rolls Royce, Airbus UK, Getrag-Ford and Element 6 (previously De Beers). Research has been recognised by esteemed organisations and members of AMTReL have been awarded, variously: the IMechE Joseph Whitworth prize in 1973 and in 1992, the Donald Julius Groen Prize in 1989 and the A.M.Strickland Prize in 1997. The research outputs of the AMTReL continue to have significant impact in the area of grinding process technology and recent innovations have been exhibited at international machine tool exhibitions (including, for example MACH05 - Hannover).

The group has to its credit over 300 scientific papers and books in the area of manufacturing processes and tribology.

The senior staff have active roles within numerous leading national and international consortia that influence decision making and policy on manufacturing technology research, education and dissemination.

The AMTReL group also engages in consultancy, training and support activities for local and regional SME’s.  It is a regular host to visiting scholars and is presently establishing formal links with a number of European and Asian Universities.

The AMTReL group is continuing to enhance its research membership, facilities and resources in response to the demand for high quality fundamental and applied process technology research.
