Dr Martin Sharp has given two talks on Lasers in Manufacturing to local IET network groups. The first talk was given to the Manchester branch on 23rd November 2010 and the second talk was given to the Merseyside and West Cheshire Group on 8th December 2010 in the Peter Jost Centre, LJMU, including a tour of GERI's Photonics Laboratories (PIE and CEORG).

October 2010

The GERI Strontium-90 radiation facility was successfully audited by the University's consultant Radiation Protection Adviser, Mr Robert Collins of Radman Associates on 6th October 2010. The storage, safety and experimental procedures that have been put in place have been deemed to meet the standards required by legislation. Experimentation has now begun using the radiation source as part of the EPSRC TERAFS Technology in Radiotherapy Feasibility Studies (BM/EPSRC/09/07/2431) project, in which GERI's role involves studying the biomechanical effects of radiation on living human cells.

Dr Mark Murphy submitted a proposal to the Leverhulme Trust on 11th November 2010. The proposal looks at the effects of accumulative sub-lethal doses of ionising radiaton on the physical and structural properties of both normal and cancerous human cells.

September 2010

Dr Donka Novovic and colleagues from Rolls Royce visited the General Engineering Research Institute on Friday 24th September 2010 to discuss future collaborations.

Professor Takazo Yamada is visiting GERI from September 2010 until January 2011. Professor Yamada is from Nihon University, Tokyo, and specialises in researching abrasives machining and processes. Professor Yamada is based with Dr Michael Morgan at AMTReL for the duration of his visit.

Dr Martin Sharp presented four papers on behalf of AILU at the 29th International Conference on Applications of Lasers and Electro-Optics (ICALEO 2010), at Anaheim, USA. Dr Sharp also chaired a special session at ICALEO 2010.

The first call for the 6th International Conference on Precision Machining (ICPM 2011) has been distributed. Dr Michael Morgan is Chair of this conference, to be hosted by Liverpool John Moores University in September 2011.

We welcome two new post-graduate research students to GERI - Mr Kelvin Uzoezie and Mr George Goh.

Dr Morgan has submitted an EPSRC proposal in collaboration with the University of Huddersfield, Fuchs, Balance Systems, FELDEC, Bielomatik and other industrial partners. Research would focus on near dry machining methods. The project is worth £1.1 millon. Dr Morgan has also submitted an application for funding to the Indian Government in collaboration with Professor Yogesh Bhalerao, Dean of Mechanical Engineering at Maharashtra Academy of Engineering, India. This would fund a six month research visit.

Dr Martin Sharp gave talks at the Institute of Physics meeting at Liverpool and the MTEC sensors exhibition at the NEC.

April 2010

On Thursday 1st April 2010 Professor David Burton showed Sir Alan Langlands, the Chief Executive of HEFCE, around the Institute.

On Tuesday 6th April 2010 Professor David Burton showed Mr Robert Hough, Chair of the North West Development Agency, and Dr John Stageman, Vice President of UK Science Affairs at the North West Development Agency, around the Institute. The visitors were accompanied by Professor Michael Brown, Vice Chancellor of Liverpool John Moores University.
