Postgraduate Research Opportunities

MPhils and PhD's

Postgraduate Research Students are key contributors to the Faculty's thriving Research culture.  The breadth of knowledge within the Faculty makes it an ideal place to study for a research degree.  With experts in both qualitative and quantitative research methods and leading research experts in many areas of Health and Applied Social Sciences the Faculty is well placed to support new researchers looking to study here with us.  There is special interest in the following areas:

  • Adaptation to Chronic Illnesses
  • Complimentary Therapies
  • Disabilities
  • Midwifery and Women’s Health
  • Nursing Policy and Practices
  • Pain Management
  • Studies of Children
  • Public Health

The Faculty's diverse research interests are reflected by the breadth of research being undertaken by its current MPhil/PhD students.  Some examples of current research projects are:

  • Relative Deprivation and Health Inequalities
  • Making Sense of Life with Cystic Fibrosis: The Issue of Treatment Adherence
  • An Investigation into the Relationships between Student Midwives Clinical Learning and Hierarchical Structures: A Cross Sectional Year Comparison

Students can either register for the MPhil or PhD.  The normal mode of entry for PhD students is the MPhil/PhD route which sees students registering initially for an MPhil before being given the opportunity to transfer on the PhD route.  However, under certain circumstances students can register directly for a PhD. (Please see the Research Support Office webpages for more details)

Entry requirements for both the MPhil and the PhD are:
  • possession of adequate academic qualifications
  • satisfactory references
  • your proposal being a worthwhile research project which fits our expertise
  • a suitable academic member of staff being available to supervise your study

For enquiries please contact the programme leader, Christine Wall (c.t.wall@ljmu.ac.uk, 0151 231 4083) in the first instance.
