Northern Financial Inclusion Conference 2008

Banking on a Fresh Start - download report here
It is 10 years since the Social Exclusion Unit’s report, “Bringing Britain together: a national strategy for neighbourhood renewal”, highlighted the lack of access to financial services by people living in deprived neighbourhoods. In the same year, LJMU and ABCUL published, “Towards Sustainable Credit Union Development”, which provided the impetus for major reform in the credit union sector. The Northern Financial Inclusion Conference aims to reflect upon 10 years of promoting financial inclusion and to offer key insights for the future.
Key speakers within the sector will address:
• Promoting financial inclusion – critical reflections, 10 years on.
• The Co-operative and financial inclusion.
• The role of local government in widening access to finance.
• Social landlords and financial inclusion.
• Widening access to finance for ex-offenders.
• Serving low income, high risk borrowers.
• Do financial capability initiatives lead to effective financial inclusion?
New credit union research, ‘Breaking through to the future, the strategic development of credit unions, 1998 – 2008’, will be launched at the conference.
