Sustaining Happiness Symposium - Dr Peter Malinowski, a Senior Lecturer in the School of Psychology delivered a syposium entitled 'Sustaining Happiness' as a part of September's BA Festival of Science. Club Health Conference 2008 - The Fifth International Conference on Nightlife, Susbstance Use and Related Health Issues took place from the 23rd-25th June 2008 in Santa Eulalia, Ibiza. The Changing Face of Pain Management Programmes Symposium - ‘The Changing Face of Pain Management Programmes’ an Official Satellite Symposium of the 12th World Congress on Pain took place 13-15th August in Liverpool. This symposium, hosted by the Pain Relief Foundation was jointly organised by researchers and clinicians from Liverpool John Moores University, University of Liverpool, The Pain Relief Foundation and The Walton Centre for Neurology and Neurosurgery NHS Trust. A variety of international experts presented the latest evidence on the multidisciplinary management of chronic pain. Drink and Drugs Research - Research carried out by LJMU's Centre for Public Health has found that young people are intentionally taking drink and drugs to enhance sexual experience. The study, published in the BMC's Public Health open access journal, found that nearly all of the 16-35 year old participants had drunk alcohol with most having had their first drink when 14 or 15 years old. Health Services Research and Pharmacy Practice Conference - The School of Pharmacy and Chemistry hosted this annual conference on April 14th and 15th, chaired by Professor Janet Krska. The conference theme was Health and the Younger generation, reflecting the School’s strong links with the Medicines for Children Research Network and interest in managing childhood conditions. GOALS Awards - The 'Getting Our Active Lifestyles Started' (GOALS) city-wide campaign held its annual awards ceremony to help celebrate commend thirty families from all over Liverpool for adopting healthier lifestyles. The GOALS campaign, run by LJMU in partnership with Liverpool City Council (SportsLinx) and Alder Hey Hospital. It is part of Liverpool PCT's Taste for Health Strategy and receives funding from the Neighbourhood Renewal Fund. To read more about these awards please click here.
Science Inagural Lecture - Professor Gareth Stratton, Professor of Paediatric Exercise Sciences for Science for LJMU's School of Exercise Sciences, gave his inaugural Professorial Lecture, entitled 'Am I Bovvered'. RCN Conference - Liverpool John Moores University hosted more than 500 nurses for the Royal College of Nursing's Annual Conference. LJMU, in conjuncton with the University of Liverpool and Edge Hill University University hosted this successful 4 day event at the Adelphi Hotel. Dieting Research - A study carried out by LJMU's School of Psychology suggests that the fluctuation of dieters' daily calorie intake can affect their own body image. Dr Paul Lattimore and Rachel Hutchinson found that dieters whose who fluctuate between high and low calorie meals tended to be more dissatisfied with their looks. Underage Drinking Research - Research carried out by LJMU's Centre for Public Health (CPH) has found that 84% of 15-16 year olds surveyed drank alcohol. The report, entitled 'Risky Drinking in North West School Children and its consequences: a study of fifteen and sixteen year olds' was a joint study by CPH, Trading Standards North West and the Home Office (North West). Industrial Professor for Pharmacy - Professor Tony Nunn, Clinical Director of Pharmacy at Alder Hey Children's Hospital and Associate Director of the Medicines for Children Research Network at the University of Liverpool has been appointed as the new Industrial Professor for LJMU's School of Pharmacy and Chemistry . Dangers of Drinking at Home - A study, carried out by LJMU's Centre for Public Health, has examined young people's consumption of alcohol prior to going on a night out. It found, among other things, that more than half of those interviewed usually drink at their own or a friend's house before leaving for a night's drinking in a town or city centre. New Paramedic Training - On Monday 12th November 2007, LJMU's new Paramedic Practice Suite was officially opened. This suite, in addition to a new portfolio of programmes for paramedics and ambulence staff, will help LJMU in its ambition to establish itself as a centre of excellence for professional education in pre-hospital care. LJMU First for Research Impact - A new league table published by the Guardian newspaper indicates that Liverpool John Moores University is the number one university in the North West in terms of the impact of its research. Celebrating Community Nursing - The 'Celebrating Community Nursing in Liverpool' education summit, organised by Sean Mackey of LJMU's Faculty of Health and Applied Social Sciences and Pat Jones, Head of Workforce Development at Liverpool's Primary Care Trust, commemorated the role that Liverpool played in developing district-nursing. This included the presentation of commemorative gift to William Rathbone X in recognition of the Rathbone family's long-standing and continued support of district and community nursing. Geriatric Care - As part of the Faculty of Health and Applied Social Sciences lecture series, Professor James Barrett, LJMU's Honorary Professor of Health Care of Older People delivered a lecture entitled, 'How has Goldilocks influenced bowel care in older people?'. Live Fast, Die Young - Research carried out by the Centre for Public Health indicates that pop stars are twice as likely to die young. The paper, entitled 'From Elvis to Eminem: the Early Mortality of European and North American Rock and Pop Stars' has been published in the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health.
