Eating Disorders Conference

The multi-disciplinary Eating Disorders conference that took place at the Peter Jost Enterprise Building, Byrom Street, on 7th September, was a great success.  It attracted excellent media coverage (TV, radio, local & national newspapers) and was subsequently over-subscribed with delegates from around the UK.  Delegates comprised academics, carers, clinicians and service users in equal measure.  Speakers included carers, people with eating disorders, and expert clinicians and academics (Prof. Simon Gowers, University of Liverpool; Prof. Janet Treasure, Guys Hospital, London; Susan Ringwood, CEO, b-eat; Dr. Sandeep Ranote, Consultant Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist; Alison Wood, Specialist Therapist, Pine Lodge Eating Disorders Service).

In addition to guest speakers, other activities included: a very successful service-user open panel session involving two parent/carers and two teenage girls recovering from anorexia who shared their experiences; poster presentations – the poster prize went to Bronwyn Platten, Salford University; workshops, and a “big brother” video diary room which was open to all delegates to share their thoughts.

Feedback has been overwhelmingly positive from both service users and providers, including requests for a 3-day event next time and an offer from the Priory Hospital Group to sponsor the next event.  In addition to this, at a follow-up meeting with Liverpool PCT last week, the organisers were informed that funding had just been approved for 2 specialist beds at Alder Hey Hospital which was an excellent outcome from the day.
