Steve is the author of a textbook entitled “Criminal Law and Practice” 1st Edition (ISBN: 978-1-84703-449-6) published by Sweet and Maxwell in July 2008. The textbook contains 28 chapters over 700 pages and is split into three parts.

Part 1 covers substantive criminal law, including essential elements to criminal liability, fatal and non fatal offences against the person, theft and related offences, participatory and inchoate liability and general defences.

Part 2 covers criminal practice, including police powers and procedure, commencement of proceedings, magistrates and youth court procedure, bail, disclosure of evidence and crown court procedure, sentencing and appeal procedure.

Part 3 covers criminal evidence, which focuses on relevance, admissibility and weight of evidence, witness evidence, identification and expert evidence, character evidence, hearsay evidence, corroboration and circumstantial evidence, confessional evidence and the discretionary powers of the judge.

The purpose of the book is to provide a clear and detailed analysis of criminal law, criminal practice and evidence in one readily accessible source without the loss of the appropriate depth and analysis needed to develop a sufficient awareness in order to bring success.
