About the course
What is the LLB?
The LLB Honours is the classic undergraduate course leading to a qualifying law degree for professional purposes satisfying the academic training stage requirements for both the Bar Council and the Solicitors' Regulation Authority (formerly the Law Society).
On the LLB programme here at Liverpool John Moores, you will study a varied mixture of English law and there is a wide-ranging list of optional subjects that you may explore in your second and third years. It is vital that you ensure you know what is taught at each institution before you decide to apply there, as law degree programmes vary from place to place.
It is important to understand that in order to gain a qualifying law degree which satisfies the requirements of the Solicitors' Regulation Authority or the Bar Council to allow you to practise law in England and Wales, there are several modules which you are required to study and pass. These modules have therefore been made compulsory (or ‘core’) on our programme, and you will study them across your first two years. Further details on this are set out here.
(Please Note: The Law Society of Northern Ireland requires its members to hold 24 credits in EU law. Therefore, students who wish to practise law in Northern Ireland MUST take the optional module ‘European Law II’ in their second year).
In your third year you will study an entirely option-based curriculum and you will therefore have the opportunity to specialise in fields relevant to your proposed career path or modules which you simply think you may find interesting. Further details and the list of optional third year modules can be found here.

LLB 'Pathways' at LJMU
(available to students joining from 2011/12 onwards)
The staff here at LJMU recognise that some students may wish to concentrate on particular areas of law relevant to the area in which they want to specialise when they enter legal practice.
We have therefore developed specialist 'Pathways' which students may follow in order to gain an in-depth understanding of several areas of law, tailored to their chosen field.
The modular options offered focus on specific legal concepts and will run as optional modules at Levels Two and Three from 2012/13 onwards.
You will receive a certificated document at the end of your studies to demonstrate to potential employers that you have attended and passed one of our LLB 'Pathways'.
The specialist LLB options that we offer will still qualify students for practice as a solicitor or barrister in England, Wales and Northern Ireland; the optional modules sit alongside the compulsory core modules which students must still study and pass.
Specialist LLB Programmes
To satisfy the requirements for each 'Pathway', students must study at least 24 credits relevant to their chosen 'Pathway' at Level Two and at least 72 credits of the modules relevant to their chosen 'Pathway' at Level Three.
Please note: this does NOT limit students to studying for more than 24 credits and 72 credits in the specialised areas at Levels Two and Three respectively; this is merely the minimum required number of credits to satisfy the criteria for gaining a 'Pathway' certificate.
Note: Further modules may be added between now and 2012.
