Organisational Role and Responsibilities
I am the Level 3 tutor and Course Leader for the MA International Criminal Justice. As such I teach on a number of undergraduate and postgraduate courses. I run the Prisons module (LAWCJ3010) at Level 3 as well as contributing to the Policing (LAWCJ3011) and Criminal Law and Criminal Justice (LAWCJ1014) modules. At postgraduate level I am module leader for Contemporary Issues in Criminal Justice (LAWCJM046); Responding to International Crime (LAWCJM047) and Criminal Justice: Process, Policy and Practice (LAWCJM037).
Biography
Prior to embarking on my academic career I worked for Merseyside Probation Area in over a period of 15 years. During this time I held a range of posts involving the supervision of offenders in both community and prison settings. Between 1997 and 2005 I was Director of the Community Justice Unit in the Department of Sociology, Social Policy and Social work at Liverpool University having previously been a joint appointment between the University of Liverpool and Merseyside Probation Area on the MA Social Work programme. I was Course Leader for the Diploma in Probation Studies programme which was delivered collaboratively with the Universities of Manchester and Lancaster and was a nationally recognised qualification for the training of probation officers. I also taught a range of modules on the BA Criminology Programme at the University of Liverpool in the areas of prisons, criminological theory and the politics of crime control.
I am currently Editor of the Probation Journal (http://prb.sagepub.com/).
Research Interests
My research interests include the organisation and governance of the National Probation Service and HM Prison Service, the international politics of crime control, and the application of criminological theories to practice. I have presented papers on these areas at conferences throughout Europe and North America.
