Organisational Role and Responsiblities
I am currently the Level 1 tutor and have responsibility for a number of different modules. It is important to point out that I try to constantly include my research in my teaching and this is somewhat reflected in the modules on which I teach. I am now responsible for the leadership and delivery of the following modules: Level 4 Study Skills and Research in Criminal Justice, Level 5 Punishment and Sentencing and professional Development in Criminal Justice and Level 6 Work-Based Project.
I have a keen interest in Teaching and Learning and on providing a positive overall student experience. As such I am the Teaching and learning representative for Criminal Justice and I sit regularly on school, faculty and university groups/committees. I also believe in engaging with young people in criminological discussion, through events such as our 'Days of Crime' sessions. I am also involved in the school open and experience days.
Biography
My background is heavily rooted in practice within the Criminal Justice System. I have worked for both Greater Manchester and Merseyside Probation areas for a period of 12 years. During this time I was involved in a variety of roles within the service, being responsible for the supervision of offenders both in the community and whilst they were serving prison sentences. I also took some responsibility for the training of new probation officers. This role was extended when I took up employment at Liverpool University and taught on the Diploma in Probation Studies programme. During this time I was able to combine my experience as a practitioner within an academic setting.
Research Interests
I have a wide and varying range of research interests; however in the main I have a keen and active interest in the issue of social exclusion, particularly with regard to the homeless population, diversity, the management and treatment of sex offenders, drug users, young people and the notion of effectiveness in probation interventions. In relation to these areas I have presented papers and been invited to speak at conferences in Britain and North America.
