John Byrne is a Lecturer at Liverpool School of Art and Design. He is also currently the Manager and Curator of the Site Project at Liverpool School of Art and Design. The aim of the Site project is to interface the work of students and staff at Liverpool School of Art and Design with the work of National and International Artists and Designers and to bring this work into contact with local, national and international audiences and publics. Over the last fifteen years, Byrne has published internationally on issues surrounding contemporary art and its relationships to technology and popular culture. During this period Byrne has also worked collaboratively on the curation and production of a range of events, shows, projects and films. Most recently, Byrne has co-produced ‘Damien Hirst: One Night Only’ for the Lewis Glucksman Gallery, Cork, Ireland: co-curated and managed the ‘Martha Rosler Library’ at Liverpool School of Art and Design (in collaboration with e-Flux and Liverpool Biennial); produced and curated ‘CreamTVfields' at the Creamfields 10 Festival in August 2008; and co-produced Noodle Bar (Static Gallery/Liverpool Biennial 08). Byrne has recently completed his first book ‘High Art: Low Life: Art, Technology and Popular Culture in the Last Century’ which is expected to be published by Rebelo Publications and Cambridge University Press in spring 2009. Byrne is currently curating The Centre of Attention’s project ‘Darling’, in collaboration with FACT, to be shown in Liverpool’s new Art and Design Academy in February/March 09 and is working in collaboration with Charles Esche (Director of the Van Abbemusuem), Annie Fletcher (Programmes Curator at Van Abbemuseum) and Juan Cruz (Head of Art at Liverpool School of Art and Design) on the ‘Autonomy’ research project.
