Juan Cruz is an artist whose recent work comprises installations of projected images and text. Previous works incorporate a broad range of forms including books, performances, installations and recordings. Much of his work engages with translation, and employs it both as a metaphor for visual representation and as an embodied and performative process. Recent exhibitions include Squatters (curated by Nicholas Bourriaud) Murcia, Spain 2008 and solo shows at Remise Bludenz, Austria 2007 and Peer, London 2005. In 2006 Juan Cruz a translation of Niebla (fog) by Miguel de Unamuno was published by Forma, Newcastle and he was included in The Alpine Fantasy of Victor B. and Other Stories, Ed. Jeremy Ackerman and Eileen Daly and published by Serpent’s Tail, London. He will have a solo show at the Galeria Elba Benitez, Madrid in November 2008 and is working on a project for the Edinburgh Festival 2009 (curated by Juliana Engberg). He is represented by Matt’s Gallery, London and Galeria Elba Benitez, Madrid.Juan Cruz was appointed in June 2008 to the post of Head of Department – Art at the Liverpool School of Art and Design, Liverpool John Moores University. Prior to that he was a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Art at Goldsmiths College, University of London, where he had been employed since 2000. |
