A graduate of Liverpool Polytechnic Ian joined the LJMU programme team in 1996 with the remit to challenge the way that design, technology & practice taught and researched within the department.  He has headed the architecture programme area since 2004. 

Ian has taught architecture in Malaysia and Turkey and led collaborative architectural design workshops with post graduate students in Germany, Austria and Slovenia in collaboration with universities from Hamburg, Dresden, Graz, Amsterdam, Chalmers and Lisbon.

Ian currently delivers lectures and attends design reviews across all years of the BA Architecture programme and teaches on the following modules in the Master of Architecture programme:

Research

Ian’s research is centered on the analysis of cognition in the creative process. 

In recent years this has focused on the effective measurement and enhancement of processes and practices in the briefing, conceptual design and post occupancy evaluation stages of building design.

This had led to a number of studies with partner universities and local authorities across Europe including, The University of Thessali School of Architecture - Athens, The Hogeshool voor Wetenschap en Kunst, Sit Lucas School of Architecture – Brussels, The Technical University of Budapest, Knowsley Metropolitan Borough Council and  Liverpool City Council.

Professional Activities

In his practice as a Registered and Chartered Architect, over the last 20 years Ian has worked in a range of multidisciplinary practices before forming his own design company, with partner Fiona, in 2001.  His back catalogue of completed projects ranges from the large scale reclamation and master planning of post-industrial landscapes to the industrial design of transport infrastructure.  His practice currently specialises in the creative adaptation and transformation of historical buildings.  His buildings have won RIBA Regional and Civic Trust awards.

In recent years Ian has acted as Clients Design Advisor (CDA) for Liverpool City Council’s Building Schools for the Future (BSF) Programme.  He has also been commissioned as CDA on the number of Higher Education capital projects.

He has sat on a number of local community group boards and has chaired steering groups for a range of design led community projects.

Ian is an Academician in the Academy of Urbanism and Vice Chair for RIBA Validation panels.
