Free to Write

The Centre for Writing has conducted this project which aims to give a voice to ex-offenders and former criminals.

The Free to Write project was organized by the Centre for Writing in conjunction with Merseyside Probation Services and the Learning and Resource Centre in HM Prison Liverpool. Funded by the Paul Hamlyn Foundation, this project was developed as a writing programme for inmates and ex-offenders, and straddles prison and probation as an integral part of resettlement programmes.

This innovative project will result in the publication of an anthology of life writing, entitled ‘Leaving’. The book will record the emotions and experiences of inmates as they try to re-enter society upon leaving prison.

The Centre is also planning an international conference on prison writing.
