Participants required for research into mindfulness meditation at LJMU

Peter Malinowski, Adam Moore, Bethan Mead, Paul Pozuelos and Namira Pineroli of Liverpool John Moores University School of Natural Sciences and Psychology are looking for potential participants for two research studies that aim to develop an understanding of the underlying processes of mindfulness. Mindfulness may be both inherent and/or trained and has been described as ‘the ability to pay deliberate attention to our experience from moment to moment, to what is going on in our mind, body and day to day life and doing this without immediate judgment.’ Mindfulness techniques are being increasingly used in psychology to help alleviate a variety of physical and mental conditions and may be related to elements of cognitive processes.

Peter Malinowski, Adam Moore and Bethan Mead are conducting an experiment to investigate the relationship between naturally occurring mindfulness and cognitive abilities that change with age. Previous research indicates that mindfulness may be related to some cognitive abilities that change as we get older. Eligible participants will be reimbursed with a £10 Tesco voucher for attending a 75 minute (approx) testing session. This study will begin in October 2011 and enrolment is open to interested individuals aged 45 to 75 years old.

Peter Malinowski, Paul Pozuelos and Namira Pineroli are conducting a five-week EEG study that aims to investigate the relationship between mindfulness meditation, attention and brain activity. Eligible participants will be randomly assigned to either a meditation group or a non-meditation control group. Participants must be willing and able to attend LJMU on 5 occasions to have their brain activity monitored whilst they complete questionnaires and tests of attention (EEG recordings, 2 sessions) and attend a mindfulness meditation training course (3 sessions). Participants do not require any prior meditation experience. Participants in the meditation group will receive initial meditation training and will be required to meditate regularly for brief periods over a period of 3 weeks. After the study, interested participants from the control group would be offered meditation training. Participants will be reimbursed for their involvement in the study with training in mindfulness meditation from a trained instructor and gift vouchers worth £20. Enrolment is open now and the study is due to start October 2011.
