Research Interests:
- Characterizing the palaeoenviroments in which our early ancestors lived.
- Vegetational and faunal surroundings of the earliest archaeological sites.
- Early human adaptations.
Teaching and Research:
My current research explores the environmental contexts of the evolution of human behaviour in Africa. I focus on the interpretation of the dynamic aspects of hominin evolution, particularly behaviour and ecology, within accurate environmental settings.
My research into artiodactyl ecomorphology explores the ecological context of human evolution and the use and misuse of uniformitarian precepts to make palaeoecological reconstructions. I have also worked extensively studying the ecology and evolution of pigs (Mammalia: Suidae) during the Neogene.
At LJMU I am a co-director of the Research Centre in Evolutionary Anthropology and Palaeoecology. My field work programme focusses on the Homa Peninsula, in Kenya.
