Welcome to the School of Natural Sciences & Psychology

The other academic departments in the Faculty are the School of Sport and Exercise Sciences, the School of Pharmacy and Biomolecular Sciences, and the Astrophysics Research Institute.

This is a particularly exciting time for the School, which now incorporates the former Schools of Biological and Earth Sciences and Psychology. Over the next two years, new purpose-built science buildings are being developed at Byrom Street which will enable the School to consolidate all of its teaching and research in one site. New laboratories, staff and technical accommodation, and student teaching space will provide the School with state of the art facilities. During phase one, the psychology part of the School, moved from the Henry Cotton Building into the new £20 million Tom Reilly Building.

The School of Natural Sciences and Psychology currently has 60 academic staff members, sixteen dedicated, full-time technicians, and nine administrative staff. The School is also supported by a number of administrative and technical staff within the Faculty.

The School offers a range of programmes at undergraduate level in the areas of biological sciences, environmental sciences and psychology, including a Foundation in Natural Sciences. All of the psychology programmes provide students with the opportunity of recognition by the British Psychological Society. Four MSc programmes provide postgraduate training and professional development in four major areas of applied psychology.

Research is actively pursued and is a key strategic priority for the School, with particular strengths in the areas of biological sciences, ecology, environmental sciences, anthropology, education and health psychology. The internationally recognised Research Centre for Evolutionary Anthropology and Palaeoecology is also based in the School. In the current Research Assessment Exercise, over 30 staff from the School of Natural Sciences and Psychology were entered with five Units of Assessment – Professions Allied to Health, Nursing, Education, Biological Sciences and Anthropology.
