'The Cruel Sea' - Sir Robin Knox-Johnston to deliver Roscoe lecture

Sir Robin Knox-Johnston, the first man to sail solo, non-stop around the world, will deliver a lecture as part of Liverpool John Moores University’s prestigious Roscoe Lecture Series on Wednesday 7 September 2005.

The lecture, entitled ‘The Cruel Sea’, is expected to be as compelling as the Nicholas Monsarrat novel from which it takes its name.

The lecture will start at 5pm in the Liverpool Anglican Cathedral on Wednesday 7 September. Entrance is free but by ticket only. To reserve your tickets, please contact Barbara Mace on 0151 231 3852.

Sir Robin Knox-Johnston's dramatic account of his single-handed voyage around the world, ‘A World of My Own’, is now a treasured classic of seamanship and endeavour. His epic voyage began on June 14 1968, when aged just 29 he sailed his boat, Suhaili, out of Falmouth harbour to take part in the Sunday Times Golden Globe Race. He rounded Cape Horn on 17 January 1969, 20 days before the only other remaining contestant Bernard Moitessier, who later abandoned the race. Thus Knox-Johnston became the first man to circumnavigate the globe non-stop and single-handed on 22 April 1969, the day he returned to Falmouth.

Since his return, Sir Robin has received an endless list of awards during an eventful career, including the CBE in 1969, UK Yachtsman of the Year in 1970 and again in 1994, the Institute of Navigation Superior Achievement Award, and he was knighted in 1995.

He is also Chairman of Clipper Ventures Ltd, which owns the rights to the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race, due to start in Liverpool on 18 September 2005.

The Roscoe Lecture Series are hosted by LJMU's Foundation for Citizenship, which promotes active citizenship within the University and the wider community.
