First Annual International Conference on Working with Emotions: Organisations, Occupations & Self
The first Annual International Conference on Working with Emotions: Organisations, Occupations and Self is to be held on 23 September 2005 at The Tavistock Centre, 120 Belsize Lane, London.
The conference will bring together world experts on emotions in the workplace to discuss the latest developments and research in the area of emotions, health, professional occupations and organisations. The conference is a collaborative event between five universities in the UK, who host the Emotional Labour Network Seminars. The conference is organised by: Dr Deborah Mazhindu (Liverpool John Moores University), Dr Ruth Simpson, Dr Stephen Smith, Dr Nelarine Cornelius (Brunel University), Professor Pam Smith (University of Surrey), Professor Mike Rustin (University of East London) and Professor Del Loewenthal (Roehampton University).
The keynote speaker is Professor Arlie Russell Hochschild (University of California at Berkeley, USA), an acknowledged expert on the globalisation of human female labour, the organisation and sociology of emotions and the male/female work and life time bind. Professor Hochschild's keynote address will examine 'Emotional work in a rent-a mum, rent-a dad culture'.
The conference will offer participants three key themes for the day:
- Researching Emotions (methodological issues)
- Emotions Occupations and Practice
- Emotional Labour and Organisations
The conference will be chaired by a number of eminent researchers in emotions, including Professor Pam Smith, Professor Mike Rustin, Professor Bob Briner, Professor Helen Cowie, Professor Del Loewenthal, Dr Gillian Bendelow and Dr Nelarine Cornelius who will bring their experience and knowledge of emotions to share in the discussion of conference paper and poster presentations, on such topics as:
- The attitudes, manner and behaviour of call centre workers (Aikaterina. Koskina, University of Sunderland).
- Intimacy versus efficiency in emotion work (Ursula. Murray, University of Hertfordshire).
- In pursuit of modesty: contextual emotional labour and the dilemma for working women in Islamic societies (Diana Winstanley, Kingston Business School)
