Application figures update
Latest application figures show LJMU on track to meet undergraduate student recruitment targets
LJMU today announced that applications for its undergraduate courses have remained consistent with the record-breaking levels enjoyed in 2005, where the University enjoyed an 11% increase overall.
Nationally, the latest statistics from UCAS show a 3.4% (-12,941) decrease in the number of students applying to UK higher education courses starting in autumn 2006.
Carolyn Williams, LJMU’s Director of Student Recruitment and Widening Access, said: “Overall the application figures show that people haven’t been put off applying by the introduction of the new tuition fees. In fact, a lot of our students may actually be much better off under the new system thanks to the introduction of our new range of bursaries and scholarships.”
She continued: “What’s interesting about the UCAS figures is that contemporary universities, like LJMU, which specialise in vocational degrees offering excellent graduate employment prospects, seem to be fairing better than universities offering more traditional types of degrees. That’s because students want to know that their investment is going to pay dividends once they graduate. By applying to LJMU they know that their high quality degree comes with added extras, like outstanding work experience and practical training that will make their CVs stand out when they start applying for jobs.”
The UCAS figures relate to applications received up to January 15 2006. Though an important milestone, it should be noted that UCAS is only one route for entry onto higher education. Traditionally LJMU receives a high proportion of applications direct to the University throughout the year for entry onto part time, postgraduate and professional/short courses.
