Applications up by 10.5%

Applications to study at LJMU are up by around 10.5% on this time last year, according to new figures released by UCAS today. Nationally, the number of students applying to UK higher education courses starting in autumn 2007 also rose, but only by 6.4%.

Carolyn Williams, Director of Student Recruitment & Widening Access, said:

''These figures show that demand for our degrees is increasing and that's because we place a real premium on giving our students the skills, experience and know-how demanded by today's employers.
"LJMU offers a broad spectrum of undergraduate degrees from the arts and life sciences to management and engineering, and applications are up for each of our six Faculties.
"This rise indicates that students haven't been frightened off applying by the new tuition fees. Around two thirds of our students come from backgrounds where going to university isn't the norm. Many are actually better off under the new system thanks to our new range of bursaries and scholarships, which can be worth up to £10,000 a year.
"There's no denying that getting a degree requires a financial investment but it is an investment that will pay real dividends. Recent research shows that university graduates now enjoy lifetime earnings which can be up £160,000 more than for someone with just A-levels."

The UCAS figures relate to applications received up to January 15 2007. Though an important milestone, it should be noted that UCAS is only one route for entry to higher education. Traditionally LJMU receives a high proportion of applications direct to the University throughout the year for entry onto part time, postgraduate and professional/short courses.
