Recycling grows

16 September 2009

Recycling at LJMU is changing, From October there will be a new way to recycle, which means not only will you be able to recycle paper and cardboard, but plastic, cans and in the future glass - in fact all waste.

The new Recycling and Waste Contract has been awarded to Sita UK - enabling the University to deal with one contractor for all recycling and waste.

Alun Thomas, Recycling and Waste Manager at LJMU, said: “This contract is a joint initiative and provides a partnership between LJMU, Liverpool University, Hope University and Liverpool Institute of Performing Arts.”

“The previous contract focused on general waste to landfill and offered only paper and cardboard recycling in some areas. For other materials like plastic, cans and glass we had to use a number of different companies to enable the recycling of these materials.”

“The new service will provide the recycling and waste services all from one company and Sita will provide clear bags for recycling and carry out audits to identify areas where frequent contamination is occurring and where increases in recycling can take place.”

The current red ‘Eurocarts’ will be replaced by new carts bearing images of paper, cardboard, plastic, cans, glass and waste for easy disposal of waste. General waste will be taken to Orchid Environmental Services were it will be processed and used to produce Waste to Energy. This enables the University to cut the amount of waste going to landfill and helps with its Carbon Management Programme. All other forms of recycling will remain the same.

The scheme is due to commence at the beginning of October, although some Eurocarts may be changed before then. It will also be monitored monthly in order to assist with areas of improvement.
