Student's film competition success
25 September 2009
LJMU student, Joseph Oliveira, was shortlisted for a national film competition aimed at raising awareness of knife crime.
Joseph came in the top 12 of The Life Channel Young Filmmakers' Competition, held in association with the Daily Mirror's Stop Knives Save Lives campaign, with his film entitled 'Universal Effects.'
The top 12 entrants, who all won Flip Ultra digital camcorders, were judged by a high profile panel including Hollywood star Ray Winstone, king of the I'm a Celebrity jungle Joe Swash, actor Ashley Walters, Assistant Chief Constable Duncan McCausland and Phil Austin, Chief Executive of The Life Channel.
Ray Winstone oommented: "I thought the selection of films we saw was great. But we've got to take a step back from that because this was more than a straightforward film competition. What was important about all this was the message the kids had for us. A competition like this is great because kids are involved with this in a way my generation never was. It gives them a serious, valued voice on something that really matters to them."
The winning films, with bright messages and ideas about tackling knife crime, will be shown nationwide on The Life Channel - a television network launched by Tony Blair in schools, and also found in surgeries and other community venues across the country.
