Made in Nepal

04 November 2009

An exhibition of community photographs from Sikles.

Dr Sara Parker, Senior Lecturer in LJMU's School of Social Science, is pleased to invite you to Made in Nepal: Sikles in Focus, A Nepali Community Photography Project, 4pm until 7pm at LJMU's Art and Design Academy, Friday 6 November 2009.

Made in Nepal is an exhibition of selected images taken by local people participating in the Sikles in Canvas project. The project engages Nepalese people from the remote village of Sikles in the Annapurna Conservation Area. The richly colourful and often playful pictures share with us an intimate story about daily life in the Annapurna Mountains. With an honest documentary quality they capture the community spirit and hard work it takes to live in this region.

The aim of the project is to create an archive of photographs taken by local people of their lives, culture and traditions.  They are creating their own ethnographic visual record of their reality and taking time to share stories along the way.  The project has empowered people to represent their own lives, depicting the everyday to the extraordinary - from school portraits to agricultural work, funerals, weddings and celebration.  Since the project began in January 2009 approximately five thousand images have been collated.

The next stage of Sikles in Canvas is a book, to be published in 2010.  The book will be used in the Sikles museum as a keystone for developing a permanent collection of images. All funds raised from this exhibition and the book will directly contribute to making this a sustainable project with a view to extending within the Annapurna Conservation region.

The event also includes a postcard making workshop for children.

You are also invited to The Casa after the event at 7pm for Nepali food and drinks.  In order to establish numbers for catering please email Samantha Fletcher s.m.fletcher@ljmu.ac.uk as soon as possible.

For more information about the project please email: s.l.parker@ljmu.ac.uk or visit: http://www.sikles.org.np/
