Higher Ambitions: Government endorse WoW

05 November 2009

The much anticipated plans for higher education were released by the Government on Wednesday (4 November) when the Business Secretary, Lord Mandelson unveiled the ‘Framework for Higher Education’ document.

In the most far reaching proposals for HE since the early 1960’s the plans highlight the need for universities to work closer with industry to best equip the nation with the skilled workforce needed to compete in the globalised economy of the 21st century.

LJMU and WoW feature as a case study in best practice to illustrate what future Governments will expect from universities in next 10 years.

Vice-Chancellor, Professor Michael Brown, comments: “Although it is distinctive to LJMU, WoW has given the Government a blueprint for how a university can effectively engage with business and industry.  Over the last two years there has been a growing interest from the Government in what we have been trying to achieve here and clearly we have created something very special.”

The report also highlights the need for greater improvement in the student experience.  Again LJMU is putting in place fundamental changes to enhance the student experience.  In response to feedback from students, three dedicated student zones have been created in each LRC to deal with all generic student facing student services. The zones will be fully open in January 2010.
