Seaside exhibition
10 November 2009
Angela Bennett, a level three History of Art & Museum Studies student, has recently curated an exhibition at Southport’s prestigious Atkinson Art Gallery.
Angela selected a number of contemporary works that the gallery has acquired over the last 50 or so years and named the exhibition 'A Modern View'. The aim was that the viewer, by reading the artists’ personal statements and explanations, would understand and view the work through the eyes of the artist.
Not being content with curating just one exhibition, Angela also used Gallery 1 to display about 20 paintings of the seaside, a topical exhibition for Southport. She linked this in to the Atkinson’s ‘ArtZone’ (the family fun space), and organised a competition for the youngsters to paint their own seaside picture. The winning picture is displayed alongside the gallery's permanent collection of marine paintings.
This second exhibition links in with Angela’s final level dissertation on the topic of coastal artists’ colonies: specifically, St Ives artists. Angela is now working on a regular basis with staff at the Atkinson Art Gallery.
Programme Leader Dr Emma Roberts commented: “It never ceases to amaze me just how much students from the programme contribute to art galleries and other cultural institutions in the region. I am most proud that Angela represents LJMU with such a high standard of work in the community. To curate two exhibitions at once for the benefit of the Southport public is a major feat.”
