Education collaboration in the USA

12 November 2009

Dr Lizzie Smears has recently returned from a three week visit to the International Institute of Qualitative Inquiry (IIQI), University of Illinois (Urbana-Champaign).

Professor Norman Denzin, Director of the Institute and internationally respected author and scholar, invited Lizzie as a Visiting Fellow. Professor Denzin leads a collaborative network from universities across the world that are engaged in the cutting edge of qualitative research in areas relating to education, health and social justice.

The Centre for Educational Research and Evaluation Services (CERES) at LJMU is signing a Memorandum of Understanding with IIQI, and is set to develop further collaborations.

Members of CERES have also been invited to lead a symposium at next year’s International Congress of Qualitative Inquiry in Urbana-Champaign, offer a workshop and deliver a plenary talk.

Professor Ian Stronach, co-director of CERES, said: “CERES is in very rapid expansion in terms of international and national reputation, but the best is yet to come.”

Lizzie said of her visit: “This was a fantastic opportunity to work alongside such highly regarded scholars, to both participate and deliver in the postdoctoral programme and to develop new collaborations with colleagues who are working at the top of their field.”

“On a personal note, I felt very privileged to be afforded access to such an esteemed group, and it proved to be heartening to observe that in respect of this work, the best in the world have integrity and a generosity of spirit that is both palpable and deeply inspiring.”

"I’m really grateful to LJMU supporting this venture through their Promising Researcher Fellowship Award. The outcomes of the visit are already materialising: a publication in an international journal has been accepted, and collaboration is bearing fruit through joint writing for an international audience. Part two of the Fellowship sees me return in May, and I will be presenting at the International Congress of Qualitative Inquiry.”
