Professor receives international recognition

Professor Emil Levi from the School of Engineering, Technology and Maritime Operations received three major honours from the Institution of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) one of the worlds most prestigious professional engineering bodies.
He was elected to the grade of Fellow of the IEEE, received the "Cyril Veinott" award and gained the "Best Transactions Paper" award from the IEEE Industrial Electronics Society for a paper published in the IEEE Transactions on Industrial Electronics. The presentations were made at a special general meeting held in Calgary, Canada.
The "Cyril Veinott" award is an annual recognition to a single individual who has significantly contributed to advancements in "Electromechanical Energy Conversion". The citation of Emil's award is "For Contributions to Modelling and Control of Induction Machines". This award was established in 2000 and has been delivered annually to an individual, with the exception of 2001 and 2002. This is the first time that the recipient originates from outside of North America.
The "Best Transactions Paper" award of the IEEE Industrial Electronics Society for a paper published in the IEEE Transactions on Industrial Electronics in the preceding year, which Emil will receive in Porto, Portugal, during the Annual Meeting of the Industrial Electronics Society (3-5 November 2009). Emil is the sole author of the paper, which was published in May 2008 and is entitled "Multiphase electric machines for variable-speed applications" (IEEE Transactions on Industrial Electronics, vol. 55, no. 5, 2008, pp. 1893-1909).
