ISBE awards success
18 November 2009
Liverpool Business School was successful at the 2009 Institute of Small Business Entrepreneurship (ISBE) Awards Dinner held on 5 November at St George’s Hall, Liverpool.
A research paper entitled 'Resource Advantage Theory and Fairtrade Social Enterprises' was named Best Paper in the Social, Environmental and Ethical Enterprise Track. It was also one of only four papers shortlisted for the Best Overall Paper Award.
The award-winning paper was co-written by Bob Doherty (Lead Author and Programme Leader for the LJMU Master in Social Enterprise), Steve Letza (Director of the European Centre for Corporate Governance), David Bryde (Reader at the Faculty of Business and Law) and John Meehan (Senior Lecturer at Liverpool Business School), and will now be submitted to the Journal of Business Ethics.
Bob Doherty said: “The paper is from a four-year study investigating how Fairtrade Social Enterprises compete in mainstream markets. It is very pleasing to see that the work, which is taken from my PhD thesis, has been recognised by both policy makers and other academics, and it is a good indicator for future research.”
The dinner was held as part of the 32nd Annual ISBE Conference, which was held at the Novas Centre in Liverpool. More than 400 delegates attended the four day event, which had a range of local and national keynote addresses and focused on ten enterprise track themes (each with a national or local sponsor). The largest track was Learning for Entrepreneurship and Enterprise Education and the lead for this track was Bob McClelland (Reader at the Faculty of Business and Law). Bob was therefore responsible for the reviewing, selection and presentation, chairing of papers within this category.
Bob McClelland commented: “This contribution and award to Bob Doherty at conference was significant in raising our Liverpool Business School national profile in social enterprise.”
The paper builds on work undertaken by the Sustainable Enterprise Research Group (SERG) at Liverpool Business School. This research group was established in 2004 to investigate the crucial areas of governance, sustainability and strategic management within the social economy. SERG also serves as editor of the prestigious Social Enterprise Journal which is published by Emerald.
