Successful launch of The Workplace
30 November 2009
The School of Media, Critical and Creative Arts enjoyed the successful launch of the new facility, The Workplace.
The Workplace is a fully-IT and AV-equipped, multi-functional suite of work spaces designed to enable students to undertake professional work projects for companies, individual employers and third-sector groups which do not have the necessary space or facilities to house the projects themselves.
Gary Millar, Executive member for Enterprise and Tourism at Liverpool City Council, Vice-Chancellor Professor Michael Brown and Dr Tamsin Spargo, Director of the School of Media, Critical and Creative Arts, officially opened the facility, which is housed in the Dean Walters Building.
The Workplace attracted funding as an exemplar innovative learning zone and it is hoped it will enhance students’ development of WoW skills. It also enables The University to extend its existing work-based learning provision for students at a time when many companies are feeling the pinch, and helps build mutually beneficial working relationships with organisations and companies who have skills gaps and/or needs that LJMU can meet.
The facility will also be a base for LJMU's growing community of student entrepreneurs as well as for activities organised by the GDC and BDC. Hosting projects in The Workplace will also enable LJMU to broker three-way partnerships between the University, employers and third-sector groups which can attract funding for projects of mutual benefit.
