Former LJMU Sports Scholar and Alumnus Beth Tweddle has been awarded the MBE in the New Year Honours List, recognising her outstanding achievements and services to sport.

The award rounds off the perfect year for Beth who took the floor exercise title at the Gymnastics World Championships in October and won gold medals on both floor exercises and bars at the European Championships in April.Beth Tweddle MBE

The 24-year-old, who is considered to be the most successful British gymnast of all time, said that the MBE was a huge privilege and remarked that she was delighted to have been recognised in the honours, which are bestowed by the Queen.

Beth Tweddle is the fourth British gymnast to be honoured with an MBE, following Nik Stewart, Avril Lennox and Neil Thomas. In her long gymnastics career Beth has achieved a number of firsts. She was the first British woman to win medals at World (bronze in 2003 and 2005; gold in 2006 and 2009) and at European level (bronze in 2002, silver in 2004, 2007 and 2008 and gold in 2006 and 2009).  She is also the 2002 Commonwealth Games Champion on A. Bars and three times Universiade Champion (2005 on A. Bars and 2009 on A. Bars and Floor). She is also seven-time British All-around Champion (2001-2007).
