LJMU proactive in recruitment for Teacher Training Programmes

Recruitment to Initial Teacher Training is a priority activity for tutors in secondary ITT programmes in the Faculty of Education Community and Leisure, working in partnership with the Teacher Development Agency for Schools (TDA).

On Friday 26 and Saturday 27 February course tutors Neil Stanley, Ken Clays and Mat McLain supported Amina Ismail and Alison Keen of the Faculty's recruitment and marketing team at the Train to Teach North conference held in Manchester.

The event was attended by several thousand attendees who were interested in exploring a career in teaching. The LJMU stand was extremely busy, with advice and support on the application and selection process provided to hundreds of potential recruits on both days. Feedback identified LJMU as one of the most friendly and supportive providers, as in previous years.

At the event, Peter Horsfall, Head of Secondary Initial Teacher Training, delivered five seminars attended by a total of over 500 participants, in which he described the PGCE learning experience, and offered welcome advice to those intending to apply for these programmes.

Peter commented: “LJMU specialises in the provision of national priority subjects in secondary education, and proactive engagement in the marketing and recruitment process is an essential strategy in meeting out targets.”

The secondary ITT team is recognised nationally for its creative engagement in recruiting to difficult subject areas. Supported by funding from the TDA, the team has led regional and national initiatives to develop a number of web sites to provide information and guidance to potential teachers of design technology and engineering, one of the newly developed ITT diploma subject lines.

The team has also led regional initiatives with other HEIs to support the development of a recruitment policy which promotes diversity as a key objective in the developing workforce. Such work has included leadership of the Merseyside Train to Teach conference which has been hosted by LJMU for the last four years, and the development of a web resource to promote recruitment from the black and ethnic minority communities of Merseyside: www.merseyteach.co.uk
