JMUp IN performance invitation
17 March 2010
JMUp IN(tegrated) Dance 2010 – a community of practice.
JMUp IN began in January 2008 as a CETL-funded sabattical. It is based in the Dance department of LJMU, where its aim is to explore the ideal of creating a learning community based on ‘lived experiences’ as opposed to purely textbook scenerios.
The project began with 13 participants: half of whom have a range of disabilities; the other half comprising of levels 1-3 of the undergraduate Dance degree programme. Since this time the company project has grown from its original 13 to 47, with a focus which began related to ‘tiered learning’ and has now shifted towards a co-operative paradigm.
The company meets every Monday evening to explore different aspects of each participants uniqueness and celebrate our ability as human beings to grow, adapt and appreciate one another as a result of this creative shared practice and unique learning environment for Dance in Higher Education.
The company will be disseminating their practice through a performance of their lastest work 'a people’s landscape', at 6pm Wednesday 24 March 2010 at the Sudley Theatre, IM Marsh Campus, and 7.30pm Friday 26 March at the BLACK-E. The piece represents a variety of aspects related to its two cycles of its evolution as a learning community, integrating long standing company members with those recently enroled into the project.
The fifth work created for the project, 'a people’s landscape' asks the question: “Have you ever just sat through a journey, staring through the window watching the landscape go by, wondering… do the cows stare back at a people’s landscape?”
JMUp IN has had several success over recent times, dissemminating its work and practice through performances in Merseyside (IM Marsh) and the Brindley Theatre as well as representing the University for International day of the Disabled Person and at the LJMU Teaching and learning conference 2008. The project was also recognised for its practice through a curriculum innovation award in 2009. Its outreach team have begun facilitate workshops and residences in a number of special schools, building partnerships with such organisations as Daisy UK.
