Outdoor Education anniversary

21 June 2010

Outdoor Education celebrated its 40th year last week with a 1970-2010 class reunion at the LSU.

Staff and students past (from as far back as 1974) and present, attended the celebrations to mark the 40th year of the programme.  Graduates travelled from as far as Vail Colorado, Singapore, United Arab Emirates, Nepal, Denmark, Holland and France to join in the event – reflecting the international career pathways that many Outdoor Education students follow.

Past students and staff alike shared memories of their time at LJMU – stories of climbing and winter mountaineering adventures, reflections of inspired outdoor learning and memories of the unique teaching approaches of the staff were all part of the reunion celebrations.

During the event graduates talked about their lasting memories, commenting on how the course inspired and supported them to follow the passion of the outdoors. Many also shared how their careers had evolved since completing their study, including expedition leaders, international mountain guides, kayak coaches, special educational needs teachers and outdoor youth workers to name just a few.

The Outdoor Education staff would like to thank all those who attended the reunion in the words of one graduate: "Keep on inspiring people in the outdoors."
