In Memoriam
05 July 2010
Staff at LJMU were saddened to learn of the death of acclaimed novelist and honorary fellow Beryl Bainbridge.
Beryl, a five-time nominee for the Booker prize and two-time winner of the Whitbread novel award, took a keen interest in the work of student writers at LJMU.
Her first novel, A Weekend with Claude, was published in 1967. Drawing on her Liverpool childhood for her early work, she made the Booker shortlist with her fifth novel, The Dressmaker, and her sixth, The Bottle Factory Outing, before going on to win the Whitbread novel award in 1977 for Injury Time. A prolific writer, she was awarded a DBE in 2000.
