Broadcast Team Leads the Way

05 July 2010

Students and staff from the broadcast department of LJMU’s School of Engineering, Technology and Maritime Operations have been congratulated by the director of a local small venture which endeavours to place students in positions of leadership, responsibility and authority. The organisation, Camp Leaders, helps to find leaders at summer camps for children in America and is part of Smaller Earth which arranges volunteer placements around the world in diverse fields such as conservation, wildlife and community development.

The Broadcast Team used its technical and operational expertise to establish a series of short video clips (which explain the processes involved in applying for places with the organisation) and extensive use was made of the School’s in-house-designed broadcast-standard TV studio where special guests were invited to talk about their life experiences. Staff and students from the School’s degrees in Broadcast Technology and Broadcast and Media Production were involved in the live sessions, with many also participating throughout post-production, even the music was created in-house. Creative Director of the series, Tomas Barcys, graduated in Broadcast Technology in 2009 and now works for Smaller Earth.

Chris Arnold, CEO of Smaller Earth, described it as "fantastic work" and went on to say "The mixture of LJMU’s dynamic students and our excited and dynamic staff has come together to really extend the levels of innovation and dedication in that team."

Smaller Earth is about to launch its latest initiative Your Big Year which is a year long competition involving partner charities such as The Everton FoundationThe Prince's Youth Business International and Prime Initiative, aimed at promoting entrepreneurship, social responsibility and being a global citizen. The winner will receive a year-long world tour to examine and develop these themes while reporting back on his or her findings.

After his experience this year, Chris has already indicated that he is looking forward to working with the Broadcast Team again: "It is something we would certainly want to reproduce and extend in the coming years."
